Since giving its first performances in November1995, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra has earned an international reputation for outstanding quality in celebrating the classic big band repertoire, including Ellington, Basie and Kenton, as well as creating exciting new orchestral works. Formed at a time when Scotland - already the breeding ground for many international class jazz musicians - saw the beginnings of an extraordinary and continuing wave of young jazz players, the orchestra set out to harness this talent and present it in its best possible light. Under the direction of saxophonist Tommy Smith, a musician who has been highly regarded across the world since his teenage years with Gary Burton’s band in the late 1980s, the orchestra has matched its ambition with results.

With unstinting energy, dynamism, enthusiasm and discipline, Smith has piloted the orchestra through an impressive list of achievements. The many top musicians the SNJO has worked with include Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, Bobby Watson, David Liebman, Ingrid Jensen, Ken Peplowski, Kenny Wheeler, Jim Mullen, Mike Walker and Joe Lovano, and composers and guest directors Florian Ross, Maria Schneider, Keith Tippett and Geoffrey Keezer.

Celebrations of Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Benny Goodman, Oliver Nelson, Benny Carter, Billy Strayhorn, Gil Evans, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Dizzy Gillespie, George Gerswhin, Joe Williams, Ray Charles and Thad Jones-Mel Lewis have been enthusiastically acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and specially commissioned works by Kenny Wheeler, Keith Tippett and Florian Ross have proved outstanding successes. New music from within the orchestra itself, paying homage to everything from football heroes to famous Scottish landmarks, has pushed the number of new works the SNJO has generated towards the one hundred mark. Currently preparing concerts featuring the music of John Coltrane and Woody Herman the SNJO continues to celebrate jazz’s rich history as well as forging ahead into as-yet uncharted territories. With a personnel brimming with youthful vigour, solo talent and collective accomplishment, SNJO looks forward to further adventures as Scotland’s leading jazz ambassadors.
